WNB Assignment: Week 3, #1 (Write 5-7 sentences about something that you know a lot about. Explain your history with this item/topic - like how long ago you learned about it, what made you interested in it, some of the facts that you find most interesting...) Use correct conventions and the strategies we discuss during class!
Think about something from the WWII KWL chart that you'd like to learn more about.
Review the WWII Vocab that we learned in class today. There will be an assignment during stations time tomorrow!

I am so, so excited to start our first official unit this week: Reading is Like a Time Machine.
This week will be spent front-loading some information about World War II into their heads so they have some context for the novel, The Darkest Hour, when we start it next week. The kids will have the opportunity to research something about WWII and will create short presentations about their topics to share with their classmates. To kick this off, Mrs. Allen, our district librarian, will be visiting classes today to briefly review research techniques and strategies! I adore learning about WWII, and I hope the kids enjoy it, too. There are so many fascinating details about the war that are overshadowed by the big names (Hitler, Holocaust, Pearl Harbor), and this unit gives us a chance to learn about some of those things - especially the female spies that were used across the world!
Later this week we will learn a new nonfiction reading strategy called THIEVES. My hope is that the kids will be able to use this strategy with every nonfiction article they get - it's a process that most good readers do naturally, but adding a name to it will allow us to practice it and utilize it every time we read. Ask your student about it later this week - I hope you'll see that it's how you read nonfiction texts, too!
