to survive.
And we made it! Halloween on a Tuesday is pretty rough for everyone, and I know that today we are all going to be dragging! But, as always, I'm excited for another day in 6th grade!
Yesterday we *tried* to do a little History of Halloween lesson in social studies because Halloween actually has a pretty cool history and backstory....but it didn't get very far because we SOMEHOW got derailed...
Our conversation about Halloween diverged into a mini-lesson on WWI and WWII, a discussion about economy and inflation, nuclear power and atomic bombs, Bikini Atoll and Chernobyl, radiation, Dia de lost Muertes, Chinese-American trade agreements, the US debt, conversion rates for world currencies.....and somewhere in there we did find a little bit of time to discuss pumpkin seeds, guts, and the fact that those vines can grow just about anywhere.
6th grade is anything but boring!
We also celebrated a great first quarter with a PBIS reward party! Kids who qualified (by having less than 3 tickets and no office referrals or suspensions) got to choose from a variety of activities such as charades, coloring, slime making, candy corn relays, and mummy-making. I think everyone had a good time - I know that I did in the charades room!!!
Tonight's homework:
Continue reading The Lightning Thief and completing the assigned skills worksheets
Vocab worksheet (mini-quiz on Friday!)
We will start working today on a narrative writing piece that is based on a chapter of The Lightning Thief; this will be due Friday!
Speaking of Friday, I will be absent and the kids will have a sub. The same sub will be back on Monday when I have an in-school ELA meeting that I have to attend. The sub is wonderful and the kids really like her - so I know everything will be fine in my absence!!!
